Our temporary and unplanned hiatus in tyre test reportage is over, and it’s time to work through the small backlog of results made public during the past couple of months. We’re starting with the test of eight SUV winter tyres carried out by Germany’s Auto Bild allrad. The size 215/65 R16H tyres were fitted to a Volkswagen Tiguan for evaluation in a range of disciplines. The result? While both Dunlop’s Winter Sport 5 and the Apollo Alnac 4G were rated ‘exemplary’ by Auto Bild allrad, the Dunlop tyre managed to snatch first place from the Alnac 4G due to its marginally better performance on wet road surfaces. And while the top tyres in many tests are followed by a broad midfield, this wasn’t the case this time round: Only the Continental WinterContact TS 850P SUV achieved the second-highest rating of ‘recommended’. The Pirelli Scorpion Winter, Michelin Alpin 5 and Nokian WR SUV3 came away from the test with a ‘satisfactory’ rating, while Bridgestone must have been disappointed with the ‘conditionally recommended’ result its Produkt Blizzak LM-80 Evo gained, a rating shared by last-placed tyre, the Maxxis WP-05 Arctictrekker. As always, detailed test results can be found within the Tyrepress.com tyre test database.
